SkyCity Queenstown Casino: Hours, Entry Rules and Games
SkyCity Queenstown sits on Level 2 of Stratton House, 16-24 Beach Street, Queenstown 9300. That places it in the CBD, a two-minute walk from the lake, and the desk answers on +64 3 441 0400. Doors open at 11am daily and close at 1am, with Fridays and Saturdays running until 2am. Gaming areas are R20. In the other areas the rule is 18+ to buy alcohol. A SHOW by SkyCity card, or a valid Premier Rewards card, has to be in your hand before you play anything. We read the casino’s own pages on 28 Oct 2026 and took every number below from there.
The rest of this page adds the parts of the Gambling Act 2003 that apply to every casino in the country. Where a detail is missing from the official site, we say so rather than fill the gap ourselves.
Opening hours at SkyCity Queenstown
Eleven in the morning until one the next morning, seven days a week. Friday and Saturday get an extra hour, so the floor closes at 2am. Three dates break the pattern: Christmas Day and Good Friday, when the casino does not trade at all, and Anzac Day, when it stays shut from 3am until 1pm.
That Anzac Day gap is not the venue’s own choice. Section 172 of the Gambling Act 2003 forbids casinos from conducting gambling on Christmas Day, Good Friday, or on Anzac Day between 3am and 1pm. Plan a Saturday session and you are working with an hour more than a Wednesday gives you.
Getting in: age, ID and dress
You must be 20 or over to enter a casino, which is the line the Department of Internal Affairs sets nationwide. On this floor that means the gaming areas are R20, while in the venue’s other areas the age to buy alcohol is 18.
Accepted ID is a short list. A current passport, a current New Zealand or Australian driver’s licence, or a current New Zealand firearms licence. Those three documents cover it. An under-20 found in a gaming area gets a two-year trespass order from the casino, and a false ID can bring a fine of up to NZ$500. Dress is neat and tidy, and staff apply that on the door.
What you can play
The SkyCity Queenstown floor holds over 80 gaming machines and 8 table games. Blackjack, roulette and baccarat are the tables named on the site, and the casino publishes its own Tiger Baccarat play guide for the version it spreads. If you want the rules before you sit down, our pages on blackjack, roulette and baccarat cover the formats you will meet at a table.
How the SHOW card works
Nothing on the floor runs without a card. To play you need a SHOW by SkyCity card or a valid Premier Rewards card. At the tables you present that card to the dealer, and you may be asked to key in a PIN before the hand is dealt.
The card carries a second function. Before a SkyCare break is due, a SkyCity team member may come and remind you how long you can keep playing.
Food, drink and other venues on site
Level Two Bar & Lounge handles the eating and drinking, with all-day dining. It sits on Level 2 of Stratton House, the same floor as the casino. The casino site lists no other venue on the property.
Limits, breaks and exclusion
Pre-commitment has two routes here. On any gaming machine you set limits through the ‘limits’ icon on the screen. For tables you set limits on a form.
Exclusion works separately. At SkyCity Queenstown you can self-identify for 3, 6, 9, 12 or 24 months, and SkyCity may issue a two-year exclusion on its own. Under section 310 of the Gambling Act 2003 a casino must, on request, issue an exclusion order barring a person from the gambling area for up to two years. Complaints about casino gambling go to the Department of Internal Affairs casino gambling inspectors.
If a night out has turned into something else, the Gambling Helpline takes calls on 0800 654 655 and free texts on 8006. Our responsible gambling section sets out the tools in plainer order.
Pub pokies nearby
Queenstown-Lakes has 4 venues with pub or club pokies, per the Department of Internal Affairs list from June 2026. That is the entire local supply outside the SkyCity Queenstown floor, so if you would rather sit at a pub machine than at a Level 2 table, the shortlist is genuinely short. We keep the venue detail on our Queenstown-Lakes pokies page, and the wider national picture sits under pokies near me.
Online casinos and the new licences
No new casino venue licences will be issued in this country, according to the Department of Internal Affairs, and the Gambling Act 2003 is the reason. Online is a different market. In October 2026 the Department auctioned the right to apply for up to 15 online casino licences, and 11 entities came away with that right. SkyCity NZ Online NO1 Limited and SkyCity NZ Online NO2 Limited are both on that DIA list. Licences are expected from early 2027.
What the auction changes for players, and how the licensing process works, is covered on our gambling law page and in the new online casinos section. For the regulated market as it stands today, see NZ casinos.
Questions visitors ask
What time does the casino close on a Saturday?
2am on Friday and Saturday. Every other night the floor shuts at 1am, having opened at 11am. Christmas Day, Good Friday and the 3am-1pm stretch of Anzac Day are the exceptions to the whole schedule.
How old do you have to be to get in?
20 for the gaming areas. 18 to buy alcohol in the other areas of the venue. Bring one of the three accepted documents: a current passport, a current New Zealand or Australian driver’s licence, or a current New Zealand firearms licence.
What should I wear?
Neat and tidy is the entire published requirement, and staff make the judgement at the door. There is no listed dress code beyond that line.
