Christchurch Casino: Opening Hours, Dress Code, Games and Poker

Christchurch Casino sits at 30 Victoria Street in the Central City, Christchurch 8013, and the phone line is 0800 CASINO. Doors open at midday every day. Monday to Thursday and Sunday run 12pm to 1am, Friday and Saturday stretch to 3am. Entry is 20 and over with accepted photo ID, and the dress code is smart casual.

We read the venue’s official pages on 28 October 2026 and pulled the detail into plain English: what runs across the two floors, what the Players Club card gives you, when the poker room fills, and which dates the law closes the doors. Everything below comes from those pages or from Department of Internal Affairs material that applies to every casino in the country. We did not visit in person.

Christchurch Casino opening hours: the best window in 2026

Midday is the reliable start seven days a week. The late session is where the week splits: Monday through Thursday and Sunday close at 1am, while Friday and Saturday carry on to 3am. The weekend gives you two extra hours on the floor.

Public holidays and long weekends are flagged on the site as variable, so ring 0800 CASINO before committing to a trip. Three dates are fixed by law instead. Section 172 of the Gambling Act 2003 stops casinos conducting gambling on Christmas Day, on Good Friday, and on Anzac Day between 3am and 1pm.

Getting in: age, ID and what to wear

You must be 20 or over to walk into a casino in New Zealand. That is a DIA requirement, and this venue applies it to the whole building: under-20s are not permitted anywhere inside, restaurants and bars included.

Accepted ID is a short list. An international passport, a NZ driver’s licence, or a NZ firearms licence. Dress is smart casual and management can refuse entry, which is the line to read twice before you pack.

There is a smoking area upstairs off the atrium if that matters to your group.

What you can play on two floors

The floor spreads across two levels with 32 table games and more than 450 gaming machines. Denominations run from 1 cent to $2, and the machines are ticket in ticket out. Call them pokies or slots if you like; the signage says gaming machines.

The published table list is blackjack, roulette, Midi Baccarat in squeeze and non-squeeze versions, Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud Poker, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Rapid Roulette and Baccarat. If you want the rules and the house edge before you sit down, our blackjack, roulette and baccarat pages cover that ground.

One figure on the floor moves daily. The Caribbean Stud Poker progressive jackpot stood at $616,341.32 at 12pm on 9 October 2026. What you win depends on the hand you are dealt, so treat the board as a live number.

Upstairs there is a Premium Lounge for invited guests with high-limit baccarat, blackjack and single-zero roulette. Invitation only, so it is not a walk-in. The pages we read describe machines and tables; we found no mention of live casino games there, so check with the desk before assuming anything about streamed dealer tables.

Home of New Zealand poker

The casino markets itself as the home of New Zealand poker, and the schedule supports the phrase: cash games run Wednesday to Sunday from 6pm, and the New Zealand Poker Championships are hosted here. Which stakes are running on a given night is not posted in advance, so a call to 0800 CASINO is the quickest way to find out before you drive in. Our live poker in NZ page tracks how the room sits against other card rooms.

The Players Club card and what it gives you

Joining the Players Club is free for anyone 20 or over. Tiers run Bronze, Silver and Gold, and a new member gets $20 in Casino Dollars each month for three months plus $10 for downloading the app. Casino Dollars are playable credit with conditions attached, and that is where the tier terms matter more than the marketing panel.

The perk with a clear cash value is parking. Members park free at the Peterborough Street car park during operating hours. If you drive in on a Friday night, that is the part of the card that pays for itself.

Eating and drinking on site

Three restaurants and bars operate on the property, including Monza Sports Bar. Monza Sports Bar shows live sport and can be booked for private functions. Every venue inside is 20-plus, so nothing on site works as a family meal.

Gift cards are sold in $20 to $500 amounts and expire after three years, so check the balance before you hand one over.

Setting your own limits before you sit down

Christchurch Casino publishes the standard host responsibility tools: pre-commitment, self-exclusion, and facial recognition technology used to identify banned persons. The legal one to know is section 310 of the Gambling Act 2003. On request, a casino must issue an exclusion order barring you from the gambling area for up to two years. The request alone is enough.

Complaints about casino gambling sit with the DIA’s casino gambling inspectors rather than the venue. If you or someone in your household wants to talk to a person, the Gambling Helpline is 0800 654 655, and you can free text 8006. Our responsible gambling pages list the other tools.

Pub pokies within walking distance

Machines in this city are not confined to one Victoria Street building. DIA figures from June 2026 count 73 Christchurch pub and club venues holding 1,219 pokies between them, spread right across the suburbs. Our Christchurch pokie venue list lists them by suburb, and the wider pokies near me section covers the rest of NZ.

What the licence auction changes

On the land-based side, nothing moves. Under the Gambling Act 2003 the DIA will not issue new casino venue licences, so Christchurch keeps the one venue it has, and the rules you read above stay put. Online is where the ground shifted. In October 2026 the Department of Internal Affairs auctioned the right to apply for up to 15 online casino licences, and SkyCity NZ Online NO1 Limited and SkyCity NZ Online NO2 Limited sit among the 11 entities holding that right. Licences are expected from early 2027.

The gambling law section explains what the auction means for players, and new online casinos follows the list as licences are issued. Our NZ casinos section covers the rest of the country’s licensed venues. One ownership note worth having: in October 2026 Australian hospitality and property group Iris Capital completed its purchase of Christchurch Casino from Skyline Enterprises in a deal valued at more than $100 million. The sale also moved Christchurch Casino Ltd’s 33% stake in Dunedin Casino to the new owner.

Questions visitors keep asking

Do public holidays change the hours?

The site says hours may vary on public holidays and long weekends, so call first. Gambling is banned by law on Christmas Day, on Good Friday, and on Anzac Day between 3am and 1pm.

Can I bring my children to the restaurant?

Under-20s are not permitted anywhere inside, and that includes the restaurants and bars. The age rule covers the whole building.

What should I wear?

Smart casual, with management able to refuse entry. That is the printed standard and it applies to the gaming floor and the bars alike.
