Live Poker in New Zealand: Casinos, Clubs and Tournaments

Live poker in New Zealand runs in casinos, pubs and clubs. The three casinos below publish tournament or cash-game details, pubs and clubs fill the rest of the week, and a national leaderboard ties the pub nights together. Prices vary widely: the $2,200 multi-day event in Auckland costs 88 times the $25 Wednesday entry at a Wellington club.

We went through what each venue publishes and pulled out the parts you need before you sit down: who is allowed to play, what the tables cost, and which formats turn up on the schedule. Our wider poker section covers the rules side if you are new to the game.

Live Poker in New Zealand 2026: SkyCity Auckland

The SkyCity poker room sits at 72 Victoria Street, Auckland 0610, and it publishes a buy-in for every event on its fixture list. The card rule comes first: SkyCity states that “Poker tournaments are exclusive to SHOW by SkyCity and Premier Rewards card holders.” Without one of those cards you cannot enter, so sort the card out before you plan a night.

Games are mostly No-Limit Texas Hold’em with a big blind ante and a shot clock. Single-day and multi-day events run through the month, buy-ins vary per fixture, and late registration, re-buys and re-entries appear on selected events. The fixture list covers a wide range:

  • $125 Turbo No-Limit Hold’em Satellite with re-buys and add-ons – 15 second shot clock, late registration until the break after level 6, one add-on.
  • $250 No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout – 30 second shot clock, single day.
  • $400 Bounty No Limit Hold’em Double Re-entry – bounties, late registration until the break after level 8.
  • $550 No-Limit Hold’em Double Re-entry – multi-day.
  • $2,200 No-Limit Hold’em Double Re-entry – multi-day.

The $125 satellite is the cheapest way onto a bigger table: you pay $125 for a shot at a seat instead of the full $550 or $2,200 entry. The shot clock is the other number to note. Fifteen seconds on the turbo satellite is the tightest allowance on the list, and the freezeout gives you 30.

Christchurch Casino: Five Nights of Cash Games

Christchurch Casino calls itself the Home of New Zealand Poker, and its live poker schedule splits into two halves. Tournaments all start at 12.30pm. Cash games run Wednesday to Sunday from 6pm, and the published stakes are these:

  • $1/$3 No Limit Hold’em, buy-in $100-$400
  • $2/$5 No Limit Hold’em, buy-in $150-$600
  • $1/$2 Pot Limit Omaha, buy-in $100-$400
  • $5/$5 Pot Limit Omaha, buy-in $300-$1000

Every one of those carries a 10% rake with a $15 cap. On the $1/$3 table the cap is the figure worth remembering: at 10%, a pot has to reach $150 before the rake stops growing.

Joining takes two steps. You register on the Christchurch Casino poker system first, then ask for a seat by texting a game code to 5422 or using the card kiosk. Both routes run off that registration, so the text alone will not get you on a table.

The 2026 NLHC series runs alongside the weekly schedule, with satellites that guarantee a seat or a package when at least two players enter. Monday 7 December is set aside as a reserve day for the Main Event final table.

Dunedin: Learn-to-Play on Request

Grand Casino Dunedin publishes the least detail of the three casinos, and what it does publish splits by player type. It runs tournament events for seasoned players and for novices. The premier event tournaments are open to Grand Rewards members only, so the membership question comes up here as well.

For anyone picking up chips for the first time, the casino offers fun-gaming and learn-to-play events on request through [email protected]. Our how to play guide covers the rules side while you wait for a reply.

Pub Poker, Clubs and a National Leaderboard

Club nights carry the smallest buy-in on this page. The National Pub Poker League runs a national leaderboard, and the 2026 top three were Mino Manase, Kava Fa’alogo and Gordon Wheatley. Clubs New Zealand organises the Clubs New Zealand North Island Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament, hosted by one of its member clubs.

Seatoun Poker Club in Wellington publishes its full structure, which makes it easy to see how a club night is priced. No Limit Hold’em runs every Wednesday at 7:40pm. Entry is $25 for 5000 chips, with up to two rebuys and two add-ons at $25 for another 5000 chips each.

The payout split depends on total revenue:

  • Under $700 – 10% to the club, 35% to second, 55% to first.
  • $700 or more – 10% to the club, 15% to third, 30% to second, 45% to first.

Read those two lines together and the split is plain. The club takes 10% either way, and once total revenue passes $700 a third place gets paid, which pulls money away from first and second.

What a Freezeout, a Re-entry and a Bounty Change

A freezeout ends your night when your chips run out. You buy in once, and busting means you are done – the $250 SkyCity event is built that way. Re-entry works the other way round: bust during late registration and you can buy in again, which is what the two Double Re-entry events at $400 and $550 allow. The final cost of a re-entry event depends on whether you take that second bullet.

A bounty puts a price on knocking a player out, and the $400 SkyCity event pays bounties on top of the prize pool. A satellite is the cheaper route into a larger event, which is what the $125 Turbo does. Christchurch Casino uses the same idea for its NLHC series, guaranteeing a seat or a package in a satellite when at least two players enter.

Two mechanical details show up in most live events. The shot clock gives each player a fixed time to act – 15 seconds on SkyCity’s turbo satellite, 30 seconds on the freezeout. The big blind ante takes the antes from one player each hand instead of collecting them from the whole table. If either term is new, our Texas hold’em rules page and the hand rankings guide are worth ten minutes before you pay a buy-in.

Questions Players Ask

Where can I play poker in Auckland?

SkyCity Auckland at 72 Victoria Street is the venue we can point to with a published fixture list, and live poker in Auckland starts there. Its tournaments are for SHOW by SkyCity and Premier Rewards card holders, and everything we saw on the page was tournament fixtures. For cash games and current table times, check with the venue directly. Auckland poker players without either card can apply for one before the night they want to play.

How much does a poker tournament cost?

The cheapest entry on this page is $25 at Seatoun Poker Club, and the most expensive is $2,200 at SkyCity Auckland. In between sit the $125 satellite, the $250 freezeout, the $400 bounty event and the $550 double re-entry, so the poker tournaments NZ players can enter on this page sit inside that spread. Rebuys, add-ons and re-entries push the final cost above the advertised buy-in.

Do I need a membership card?

It depends on the room. SkyCity restricts its tournaments to SHOW by SkyCity and Premier Rewards card holders. Grand Casino Dunedin requires Grand Rewards membership for its premier event tournaments. Christchurch Casino publishes no card rule; you register on its poker system, then text a game code to 5422 or use the card kiosk to join a game. Club nights such as Seatoun’s work on an entry fee, with no card mentioned.

Schedules move, and a fixture list read in October is a starting point rather than a promise. Our poker section has the rules and the legal side. If you are weighing online tables against a physical room, the legal position is covered on our online poker in New Zealand page.
