SkyCity Auckland Casino: Hours, Entry Rules, Games and Poker Room

SkyCity Auckland Casino is in central Auckland, in the same complex as the Sky Tower. The gaming floor runs 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day, Good Friday and the morning of Anzac Day. You need to be 20 or over to get in, you need photo ID, and you cannot play a single game without a SHOW by SkyCity card. We read through the casino’s own pages on 28 October 2026 and pulled the rules together below.

What follows covers the doors, the accepted ID list, the casino floor itself, the membership card, places to eat, the exclusion rules, and where the nearest pub pokies sit. We did not visit in person for this write-up; everything here comes from the official SkyCity pages and from the Gambling Act 2003.

Opening Hours at SkyCity Auckland Casino

The gaming floor trades around the clock. Three windows are the exceptions, and they come from legislation rather than from a SkyCity decision: no gambling on Christmas Day, none on Good Friday, and none on Anzac Day between 3am and 1pm. Section 172 of the Gambling Act 2003 sets those hours, so a polite conversation at the door will not change them.

In practice, a 25 December trip into Auckland Central gets you nowhere, and an early Anzac Day start has to wait until 1pm. Every other date on the calendar, the doors stay open through the night.

Getting In: Age, ID and What to Wear

You must be 20 or over to enter any casino in New Zealand. The Department of Internal Affairs states that minimum, and the door staff apply it. Bring photo ID, and bring the right kind. The list is a current passport; a current NZ or Australian driver’s licence; a current NZ firearms licence; or a current overseas national identity card carrying a signature or biometric data. The list asks for current documents.

On dress, the official FAQ asks for a neat and tidy standard at all times. Torn or damaged clothing is listed as inappropriate, with one carve-out for fashionably distressed items.

What You Can Play on the Casino Floor

The SkyCity Auckland casino floor holds more than 2,100 gaming machines – the slots, if that is the word you use – and about 150 tables spanning more than 10 game types. The named table games include baccarat, blackjack, roulette and Tai Sai, so the popular casino games you would expect are all there in some form.

If you want to check blackjack rules before you sit down, that is five minutes well spent. Same for roulette and baccarat – the variants differ in house edge and in how the table runs, and a busy floor is a poor place to learn the etiquette.

There is a separate SkyCity Poker Room with cash games, which we cover on the live poker in NZ page. The complex also includes VIP gaming rooms for players who qualify for them.

The SHOW Card and What It Unlocks

No card, no play. A SHOW by SkyCity card is required for any casino game on the premises, whether you are standing at a machine or sitting at a table.

It is also the only route into member rewards and any casino offers built on top of them. Sort the card out before you plan a session.

Food, Drink and Live Entertainment

Two venues appear on the casino’s own pages: Food Republic and Flare Bar. Flare Bar hosts live music and entertainment, so the food and bar offerings across the site cover both a quick meal and a longer evening. The Sky Tower – 328 metres, run by SkyCity Entertainment Group – is part of the same complex in the heart of Auckland.

Setting Limits, Taking Breaks and Exclusion Orders

New Zealand law gives you a lever that does not depend on staff goodwill. Under section 310 of the Gambling Act 2003, a casino must issue an exclusion order on request, barring that person from the gambling area for up to two years. You ask, they issue it, and the same rule covers every licensed casino in the country.

Complaints about casino gambling go to the Department of Internal Affairs, whose casino gambling inspectors handle them. If gambling has stopped being an evening out, the Gambling Helpline is 0800 654 655, and you can free text 8006. Our responsible gambling page sets out the practical tools in more detail.

Pub Pokies Around Auckland Central

If you want something smaller than a full casino floor, Auckland has plenty of options. The Department of Internal Affairs counted 201 venues with 2,983 gaming machines across the city’s pubs and clubs as of June 2026. Pub and club pokies are class 4 gambling, licensed separately from casinos.

Our Auckland pokie venue list lists venues by suburb, and the wider pokies near me section covers the rest of the country.

Online Licences and What Changed in October 2026

No new casino venue licences will be issued in New Zealand. The DIA states that plainly under the Gambling Act 2003, which leaves the land-based market closed to newcomers. Online is a different story. In October 2026 the Department of Internal Affairs auctioned the right to apply for up to 15 online casino licences, and 11 entities came away with that right. Two of them are SkyCity NZ Online NO1 Limited and SkyCity NZ Online NO2 Limited.

Licences are expected from early 2027. The group already runs SkyCity Online Casino from Malta for New Zealand players, and SkyCity Entertainment Group operates land-based casinos in Auckland, Hamilton, Queenstown and Adelaide – a footprint that includes what players know as SkyCity Hamilton in the Waikato. At its annual meeting on 21 October 2026, SkyCity said it would consider proposals to buy the whole group, and it chose two of the three online licences it was allowed.

Background on the framework is on our gambling law page, and we track incoming operators under new online casinos. We also keep a wider list on our NZ casinos page.

Questions Visitors Ask

Is SkyCity Auckland open on Good Friday?

The casino does not conduct gambling on Good Friday, and the same applies on Christmas Day. Anzac Day is a partial closure – play stops at 3am and resumes at 1pm. Those three windows come from section 172.

How old do you have to be to get in?

20. That is the DIA minimum for entering a casino in New Zealand, and it applies to every licensed venue from Auckland Central to Queenstown. There is no exception for looking older than you are.

What ID should I bring?

A current passport, a current NZ or Australian driver’s licence, a current NZ firearms licence, or a current overseas national identity card with a signature or biometric data. Anything expired stays in your bag.
